Agoraphobia
Agoraphobia is an anxiety disorder involving unrealistic fears in life situations where a person feels trapped and unable to get help if needed. Examples of such situations include open spaces (bridges, marketplaces, parking lots, highways), enclosed spaces (movie theaters, shops, lecture halls), crowds, and public transportation where escape would be difficult.
This is a fear-based disorder that can be incapacitating. Oftentimes, the individual fears the possibility of a panic attack or other embarrassing or frightening occurrence. The individual with this disorder actively avoids the situation that would prompt such fear and anxiety. This avoidance can become so severe that sufferers can be housebound for many years, unable to work or go to school, and relying on others for help in managing daily needs.
Factors that may play a role in agoraphobia.
Other conditions may be present along with agoraphobia, including substance abuse or misuse, other anxiety or mood disorders, and/or depression.
The disorder often begins prior to age 35, but individuals of any age can develop agoraphobia. Risk factors include having a family member with agoraphobia, being anxious or nervous, and life events that cause extreme stress, such as the death of a loved one.
The benefits of online agoraphobia therapy.
Because agoraphobia causes such intense anxiety about being outside of one’s home, attending therapy sessions at a treatment provider can be out of the question for sufferers, keeping them from receiving help. At The Center for Treatment of Anxiety and Mood Disorders, we understand this difficulty, so we offer agoraphobia therapy via video (on FaceTime or Skype), email, and online chat.
These online therapy options can help patients feel secure in a comfortable environment during therapy, without having to interact with in-office staff in person or people in the waiting room. Research shows that the same therapeutic benefits can be obtained from in-person treatment or treatment online. Over time, many patients build the self-confidence to come in to the office or even participate in group therapy sessions.
