VR Program
The Center for Treatment of Anxiety & Mood Disorders and The Children’s Center for Psychiatry, Psychology, & Related Services are proud to announce that we have expanded our Virtual Reality (VR) program for phobias and anxiety through a partnership with XRHealth, a health care technology company.
What conditions does VR therapy treat?
The conditions that VR therapy can be used to treat are expanding as research and technology develop. Currently, VR is showing great promise for treating conditions including:
- PTSD and Trauma using EMDR
- Phobias including:
- Frear of flying
- Fear of driving
- Fear of dogs
- Anxiety including:
-
- Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD)
- Social anxiety
- Health anxiety
VR is an excellent tool for recreating these experiences in a controlled, progressive, and economical way. It sets the stage for the clinician and patient to explore these scenarios together to identify causes of distress, explore the scenario gradually, and develop healthy coping skills. VR is a tool that complements the therapeutic process, but in no way does it replace or substitute the clinician’s role.
How does this differ from traditional exposure therapy?
VR exposure therapy is more convenient, practical, and cost-effective than traditional exposure therapy. It also allows patients to take smaller steps more frequently than a traditional exposure would. As an example, using VR, someone with a fear of flying would have the opportunity to experience sitting in an airplane cabin, even for just a few moments, without the effort of booking and boarding a flight.
How do I access VR therapy?
To get started, the therapist and patient have an initial consultation outlining the patient’s concerns and goals for treatment. If the therapist and patient agree that VR is a fit, patients will receive a dedicated VR headset for use in sessions. In many cases, insurance companies will reimburse patients for this device; our team can assist in completing the form necessary for reimbursement.
The two will then agree on an appointment time and outline the exposure or type of therapy they intend to participate in during the next appointment.
At the time of the appointment, the patient will log in to the XRHealth app on the headset. At the same time, the therapist will log in on their computer, which will display the same VR simulation the patient is seeing. This allows the two to speak to one another and lets the therapist see and react to the patient’s experience in real time.
Can VR therapy be conducted remotely?
One of the biggest advantages of VR therapy is that it can be done remotely. Patients do not have to live in Florida to receive VR therapy from The Center for Treatment of Anxiety & Mood Disorders as members of our team are PSYPACT certified, allowing them to practice in 43 states.
How long will treatment last?
Exposure therapy typically lasts around 12 weeks; however, treatment timelines are fluid. One of the benefits of VR therapy is that it makes it more convenient for the therapist and patient to meet more frequently, which can strengthen and speed up progress.
